Hundreds of parishioners joined donors, architects, engineers, designers, and members of the clergy last Saturday as the Most Reverend Kevin Vann, Bishop of Orange, officially blessed the beginning of construction on the sanctuary renovation and on a new surrounding plaza at Christ Catholic Cathedral in Garden Grove. Many of their prayers were inscribed into the cathedral’s 44,000-sq.-ft. concrete floor. The event was scheduled to coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Diocese’s acquisition of the campus (formerly known as the Crystal Cathedral).
“We are blessed as a community of faith to have reached this much anticipated milestone, the day we will prepare the future worship level of Christ Cathedral for its transformation,” said Bishop Vann. “Our sanctuary will be readied for the hard work of the many tradespeople, contractors, artists, and laborers by the prayers and blessings of our community of faith.”
It’s a milestone for us as well: the first time one of our projects has been blessed by a Catholic bishop. Our frequent collaborators Johnson Fain are designing the cathedral interior renovation, while LPA (who we are collaborating with on the new West Hollywood Park) has just completed the restoration of Richard Neutra’s Arboretum and Tower of Hope, also on the Cathedral campus. Our studios are working on a long-term master plan for the campus as well as the first phase of a large public plaza surrounding the Cathedral.
