Built to its maximum footprint, the house on our clients’ lot left little outdoor living space. When they purchased the adjacent lot, they collaborated with us to design the ultimate entertaining space. Working closely with our clients, we devised a set of complementary indoor/outdoor living spaces that exemplify the Southern California lifestyle.

We built a new guest house with an open living space whose kitchen, bar, and great room all open to the terrace and backyard. The new building is designed to blend with the original home’s Mission style, but with a modern sensibility that includes wood ceilings and paneling, frameless glass details, a floating brick fireplace, and polished concrete floors.

Every inch of the site is programmed, from the kids' play lawn in front of the guest house to the pebbled dining terrace and yoga deck flanking the home gym in the back. Liberated
from the need to park cars, the guest house driveway doubles as a basketball court. Even the pool itself is divided into areas for lap swimming, splashing, and soaking in the inset spa. Additional amenity spaces include a bench swing overlooking a koi pond, two fire pits, and an outdoor shower. A planted path across the back three feet of the lot completes this needlepoint tapestry of program.

Although the two parcels remain technically separate, the entire space now reads as one large estate. The new pool cabana features the same steel construction as the guest house; Resysta planking (a sustainable recycled natural material) lines the walls and decks in both buildings. Steel awnings above all the doors on the property further unify the site. Big sliding pocket doors orient the indoor rooms of both houses toward the outdoor play and entertaining spaces.
