The Festival Companies asked our office to re-conceptualize and reposition Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, a two-story mall with a rich history, located at Martin Luther King Jr. and Crenshaw Boulevards in Baldwin Hills, midway between downtown Los Angeles and Marina Del Rey. Opened in 1947, Broadway-Crenshaw Center (as it was originally called) was like many other retail developments in the nation and set numerous retail precedents to how shopping centers are designed to this today.

Rios Clementi Hale provided new concept designs for the shopping center, providing for the renewal and continuation of the first regional shopping center in Los Angeles, master planning services, EIR and entitlement
support, and preparation of tenant design guidelines to help establish new standards of quality and design.

Plans call for the retention of existing major department stores, retail shops, and state-of-the-art movie theater, while adding new housing and a hotel to create a mixed-use community, and re-visioning the entire property with new and modern styling, landscaping, furnishing, and decorative lighting, which will provide a special inviting ambiance. Storefronts will be transparent with character and identity creatively built into them, supporting the impression of the unique spirit of the merchandise and the mall.
