Rios Clementi Hale Studios provided commercial facade and signage improvements, rehabilitated the building’s structure, and preserved the historic elements for one of the buildings listed on Palm Spring’s historic register. The building’s owner wished to transform the building into a small retail shopping center for a design-minded clientele. The building’s upgrade is focused around a custom-design trellis pattern that is both modern and period style at once as it is based of a pattern seen in existing historical photos taken of the building.

Originally built sometime in the early 1920s as the city’s first theater and pharmacy, the building required new signage, awnings, tenant
graphic guidelines, landscape and hardscape, and interior tenant improvements.

The resulting space is newly energized with the trellis pattern repeated in various subtle, yet useful and appropriate ways. The security gates, hardscape, parking, and shade elements all use the pattern, and it is also found in a subtle shading exercise on the building’s exterior walls.

In addition to the architectural and facade renovations, the landscape in the parking lot was also updated and planted with drought-tolerant plants and desert natives. RCHS used the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s guidelines for the historic renovation process.
