Julie Smith-Clementi

Partner, Rios Clementi Hale Studios

Julie views the multidisciplinary design process as an opportunity to create spaces that both engage and inspire the people who inhabit them. Since joining Rios Associates in 1989, she has been integral in the development of countless award-winning projects.

Julie is at her best when uniting her passions for architecture and interior design to create holistic environments, designing not only the boundaries of a space, but also the graphics, furnishings, and fixtures that make it inviting. Her experience in crafting acclaimed interiors persuaded her that a multidisciplinary firm should also design, manufacture, and sell furnishings that bring rooms to life.

That conviction led in 2001 to the formation of notNeutral, with Julie as its President and CEO. Under her leadership, the notNeutral brand quickly developed a national reputation and retail presence worldwide. The Lino line of coffee cups, for example, has sold nearly a quarter million units in the United States and markets as far flung as South Korea, Germany, and Australia. Like our work in architecture, landscape, and design, every notNeutral product tells its own story, from a coffee cup to cast iron teapot. In line with Rios Clementi Hale Studios’ cross-disciplinary nature, notNeutral’s investigations into shape, color, and pattern reflect back into our other work.

Julie received her Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University. As a principal since 2003, she has been responsible for extending the Rios Clementi Hale Studios footprint into branding, graphics, and other realms that allow the firm’s optimistic style to influence truly holistic solutions that transcend design boundaries.

Examples of Julie’s excellence in multiple disciplines includes off season work at The Greek Theatre and the Hollywood Bowl, some residential projects and educational projects such as Westside Neighborhood School.
